![]() | G’day, I struggled with undiagnosed ADHD for forty-six years, feeling like I didn't fit in anywhere. Since my ADHD diagnosis, I have spent the past twenty-six years reading, researching and testing every aspect of adult ADHD with the desire to become the very best version of myself. Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way…. |
ADHD - Your Hero’s Journey
Your Hero's Journey of Understanding ADHD: A Path to Empowerment
Introduction
In the landscape of personal growth and self-discovery, those diagnosed with ADHD embark on a unique Hero's Journey. Much like the classic tales told through generations, this journey is filled with challenges, revelations, and transformation.
By applying Joseph Campbell’s Hero's Journey framework, we can better understand how individuals with ADHD navigate their path, overcome obstacles, and ultimately emerge as empowered versions of themselves.
1. The Ordinary World
For many people with ADHD, the journey begins in what Campbell refers to as the Ordinary World. This stage often involves a sense of confusion or struggle in environments like school or work, where their minds may feel out of sync with the expectations of society. Tasks that seem simple for others become monumental hurdles, leading to feelings of frustration, isolation, and self-doubt.
2. The Call to Adventure
The Call to Adventure emerges when individuals encounter their ADHD diagnosis. This revelation acts as a catalyst, sparking a quest for understanding. It may come through a diagnosis, encountering resources, or simply recognising patterns in their behaviour. This call invites them to embrace their unique challenges and consider a new perspective on their abilities.
3. Refusal of the Call
Initially, individuals may experience reluctance or denial. The stigma associated with ADHD, misconceptions from their environment, or fear of being labelled can lead to resistance. This phase is deeply human, as many grapple with self-acceptance and the daunting reality of change.
4. Meeting the Mentor
Support from mentors, whether in the form of therapists, educators, family members, or ADHD advocates, plays a crucial role in this journey. These figures offer insights, strategies, and encouragement. They help individuals reframe their narrative, emphasizing strengths rather than focusing solely on challenges, and provide tools for navigating their journey effectively.
5. Crossing the Threshold
Once they are ready to accept their ADHD, individuals cross the threshold into a new realm of understanding. This often includes educating themselves about ADHD, exploring treatment options like therapy or medication, and finding strategies that resonate with their personal learning styles. This pivotal moment signifies their commitment to the journey ahead.
6. Tests, Allies, and Enemies
As they navigate this new reality, individuals face various tests that challenge their resolve. They may encounter setbacks like difficulties in concentration, impulsivity, or disorganisation. However, they also discover allies—friends, support groups, or communities that understand their struggles. These allies provide camaraderie, advice, and, importantly, shared experiences that help individuals feel less alone.
7. Approach to the Inmost Cave
In this phase, individuals confront deeper fears and challenges. They may revisit past failures or insecurities related to their ADHD. It’s a period of introspection where they learn to confront and understand their unique emotional landscapes, addressing issues like anxiety, low self-esteem, and frustration. This introspection prepares them for transformative growth.
8. The Ordeal
The Ordeal is where individuals face their biggest challenges head-on. They might experience a significant setback, such as a difficult transition in school or work, prompting a re-evaluation of their strategies and coping mechanisms. It’s a moment of crisis that tests their resilience and commitment to the journey
9. Reward (Personal Power)
After enduring the trials, individuals begin to experience rewards. These could manifest as improved self-awareness, effective coping strategies, or achieving personal goals. The realisation that their ADHD doesn’t define them but rather contributes to their unique perspective on life is a powerful reward.
10. The Road Back
Having gained newfound insights and tools, the Road Back symbolizes the return to everyday life with a fresh perspective. Individuals integrate their learnings into their daily routines, taking proactive steps to manage their ADHD while continuing to embrace their capabilities and passions.
11. The Revival
In the Resurrection phase, individuals experience a rebirth. They emerge with a stronger sense of identity, equipped to advocate for themselves and educate others about ADHD. Their transformation enables them to approach life's challenges with resilience and optimism.
12. Return with the Solutions
Finally, individuals return to their communities, ready to share the wisdom gained from their journey. By advocating for awareness, supporting others with ADHD, or simply living openly as their authentic selves, they inspire change and encourage acceptance. Their story becomes a beacon of hope, illustrating that while ADHD can present challenges, it also offers unique strengths and pathways to success.
Conclusion
The journey of understanding and embracing ADHD is a profound Hero's Journey, filled with trials, triumphs, and transformation. By recognizing and celebrating this journey, those with ADHD can empower themselves and others, fostering a world where differences are not just accepted but valued as essential contributions to the rich tapestry of human experience.
