ADHD - The Power of Self-Awareness - Jim Livingstone

![]() | G’day, I struggled with undiagnosed ADHD for forty-six years, feeling like I didn't fit in anywhere. Since my ADHD diagnosis, I have spent the past twenty-six years reading, researching and testing every aspect of adult ADHD with the desire to become the very best version of myself. Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way…. |
ADHD - The Power of Self-Awareness
The Power of Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the foundation of all personal change and the path to better emotional regulation, better focus and discipline and overall happiness and well-being.
Meta-cognition or self-awareness is the conscious knowledge of your beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and desires and serves as a crucial cornerstone for personal and professional growth.
Achieving success and fulfilment requires more than just hard skills or intelligence; it demands a profound understanding of ourselves and our impact on others.
Until you become aware of your self-imposed limitations, there are no solutions or changes. One of the primary benefits of self-awareness is the ability to recognise and manage our emotions. By understanding what triggers certain emotional responses, we can respond more calmly and constructively in challenging situations.
Think of a recent emotional meltdown and ask, how could I have dealt with this issue if I had been more self-aware and prepared? Recognise what triggers you.
By understanding what triggers certain emotional responses, you can respond more calmly and constructively in challenging situations. This not only reduces stress but also enhances your overall well-being.
How to Achieve Better Self-Awareness
Self-Reflection. Set aside time for self-reflection to consider your actions, decisions, and interactions, quiet contemplation, or discuss your thoughts with a trusted confidant.
Mindless Meditation encourages you to observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment, allowing you to understand your mental and emotional patterns more deeply.
Journaling and regularly writing about your thoughts and experiences can reveal insights into your beliefs, emotions and behaviour. Journaling encourages reflection and helps identify recurring patterns that might require change or improvement.
Ask for Feedback Encourage honest feedback from trusted friends, family, or colleagues. Their perspectives can offer valuable insights into how you are perceived and help identify areas for growth.
Self-awareness is a transformative quality that enhances every aspect of our lives. By understanding our inner world and how it influences our actions, we can achieve greater emotional control, leading to better relationships and a happier, more fulfilling life.
Something to try; Ask yourself how can you use self-awareness before having to deal with an upcoming challenge.
Something to think about; Here are some questions to develop greater self-awareness
1. What are my strengths and weaknesses, and how do they impact my life?
2. How do I typically respond to stress, and what can I learn from these responses?
3. What are the recurring themes and patterns in my life?
4. What are my emotional triggers, and why do they affect me so strongly?
5. How do my thoughts and beliefs shape my perception of reality?
6. What are my biggest fears, and how do they hold me back?
7. What activities make me lose track of time and feel most fulfilled?
8. How do I define success, and am I living in alignment with that definition?
9. What is my inner dialogue like, and how does it influence my self-worth?
10. What assumptions do I make about others, and how do they affect my interactions?
11. What do I most often avoid in my life, and why?
“Self-awareness is the ability to take an honest look at your life without any attachment to it being right or wrong, good or bad.” – Debbie Ford
